I have no idea what I'm talking about

Talking Heads

I am writing a _lot_ of conversation, I just realized. Compared to the Trials of Kyle Grave, the amount of conversation in this book — at least the first two chapters — is staggering. I guess that’s because it’s not so mysterious and action-fueled, so characters have the time to ( more… )

I’ve decided on my next novel. My plan is to start it on the 15th, which gives me 6 more days to prepare. I’m going to go for the gold this time and try to get it completed in six weeks. It’s a story about immortals and alcoholics. In other ( more… )

Behold, success.

I think. I’ve finally self-published my first novel: The Trials of Kyle Grave. Struggling through a wasteland of half-finished novels, I finally summoned up enough insanity to actually finish and publish one. That’s right. All of it. I madeĀ a beginning, a middle, and ending, and I actually went through the ( more… )

Exactly one year later…

…and I’ve gotten no-where, again. Sometimes I think I don’t have anywhere to go. I need more focus, a muse, and something to eat.

At the tone…

…the time will be December 3rd, 9:20 PM, in the year 2009. NaNoWriMo has come and passed, and I turned my eyes from it because I smelled like failure and unwashed clothes. My failed NaNoWriMo book from last year is hovering at 55 pages, almost all of it quality. That’s ( more… )

Worry not, young Jedi, for your force is strong indeed.

Frequently I have panic attacks along the line of “oh MY GAWD THESE PEOPLE ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN ME I CAN’T COMPETE” when reading the blogs of authors. Most of the time this is just because they’ve been published, they have readership and a blog and people who flock ( more… )

Those crazy dreams

Posted on September 28, 2009December 22, 2021

Several nights ago, when the moon was high and I was sleepy, I laid in bed, and like Martin Luther King, I had a dream, but unlike Martin Luther King, I will not revolutionize the world, and in fact I’m pretty sure I’ll regret this opening sentence entirely. I don’t ( more… )

“Gripping and intense” just isn’t my style.

Posted on September 25, 2009December 22, 2021

I’ve read a lot of book reviews that describe the author’s work as gripping and intense. Nothing wrong with that, it seems to be a trait that every best seller has. That’s cool. When I read my own works, the intensity is distinctly lacking. I like to think this is ( more… )

Dane Cook, you fabulous bastard

Posted on September 10, 2009December 22, 2021

Dane Cook is not a comedian, he is a teller of long, rambling stories. It just so happens that his long, rambling stories are hilarious. A lot of people seem to dislike him. That’s not surprising; I don’t agree with them, but I understand that Dane Cook mad his success ( more… )

I hate writing character profiles.

Posted on September 10, 2009December 22, 2021

Why? Because I change them so often. Characters in my story are in a constant set of flux; I’ll tweak background stories, special abilities (if any), the way they’ll respond to a situation… a whole plethora of stat tweaks goes on while I’m writing a novel, and even after I’ve ( more… )
